The Art of Storytelling in the History of Painting

Seven Pictorial Dialogues with the Great Masters.

By the Storytelling Art Institute

The history of painting is the story of a language in constant transformation. Each era builds on the explorations that came before it, examines them, and reinvents them to express a new vision of the world.

Through Storytelling Art, a pictorial movement created by Marc Ferrero, this legacy becomes the substance of a contemporary narrative style.

From Pictorial Tradition to Narrative

Portraits, still lifes, genre scenes, depictions of movement, music, and sacred images have endured through the centuries, constantly reinventing their forms and meanings.

In Marc Ferrero’s work, these great traditions are not merely aesthetic references. They serve as pictorial resources that support the narrative.

The portrait becomes a character. The object can become a narrative clue. Movement suggests action and the passage of time. Symbolic or spiritual references help construct a fictional universe.

Storytelling Art thus offers an approach in which the artistic languages inherited from the history of painting come together and are structured around a narrative.

Seven Perspectives on the History of Painting

Through seven visual studies devoted to portraiture, still life, play, dining scenes, horses, music, and mysticism, Marc Ferrero creates a dialogue between his works and those of painters who have left their mark on art history.

These comparisons are not intended to establish equivalences between artists. They allow us to observe how the same subject can take on different functions depending on the era and the artist’s intentions.

Each comparative spread invites the viewer to look at, compare, and interpret the images.

A Contribution to the Discussion on Contemporary Painting

By highlighting these connections, this series brings to light one of the goals of Storytelling Art: to situate contemporary storytelling within the tradition of major artistic explorations, without sacrificing the development of a personal artistic language.

The Institut du Storytelling Art supports this process of documentation and transmission in order to foster dialogue between contemporary creation, art history, and artistic research.
